Cordless mowers are labelled 18, 20, 40 or 48 V, sold with a 2.0 or 4.0 Ah battery and a lawn size, as if any one number told you the run time. None does alone. This guide turns volts and amp-hours into watt-hours you can compare, and explains brushless motors, the makers' lawn assumptions and battery platforms, with four mowers as examples.

A cordless mower for a British back garden is four numbers: cutting width, which sets the passes; the box, which sets the stops; the battery, which sets the lawn per charge; and weight, which decides who uses it. Which one suits a patio and a car comes down to flow, hose length, weight and whether you want to swap lances or twist a nozzle.

Pressure washers are sold on a bar figure, and bar is the least useful number on the box. Cleaning speed comes from flow in litres per hour as much as pressure, reach from the hose, and life from whether the motor is water-cooled.
