Best cordless lawn mowers for a small garden: six 18 to 48 V mowers compared on cut, box, battery and weight

A cordless mower for a British back garden is four numbers: cutting width, which sets the passes; the box, which sets the stops; the battery, which sets the lawn per charge; and weight, which decides who uses it. Six mowers from Bosch, Worx, Einhell and Gtech, from a 3.5 kg strip-mower to a 42 cm machine with a 50 l bin, on the makers' figures.

† Figure from a retailer listing or otherwise awaiting confirmation from the manufacturer; other figures come from manufacturer manuals and leaflets.

Lawn per charge is the maker’s figure where the maker states one; Bosch’s is a retailer’s, and Worx’s own pages give the WG733E three different numbers, so those are flagged. Gtech publishes run time, not area, so its cells are blank there. Weights are flagged wherever the maker and the listing differ, which is most of them.

Four numbers and a battery

Cutting width decides passes: a 32 cm mower crosses a 5 m wide lawn in 16 passes, a 42 cm one in 12. Box size decides stops: 30 l fills twice on 100 m² of fortnightly growth, 50 l once. Height range decides whether you can do the long first cut of spring and the short last one of autumn without a strimmer. Weight decides who uses it and whether it goes up the step to the shed.

Then the battery, which is the article of its own linked below. For this shortlist the useful summary: every mower here comes with one battery and a charger; the brushless ones get more lawn from the same cell; and the battery platform decides what else in the garden it will power.

The lightest full-size mower here at 10 kg with its battery, and brushless: a 33 cm cut-to-edge deck, six heights from 25 to 75 mm, a 35 l bag, and a 4.0 Ah PowerShare battery that Worx’s UK page rates for 200 m². The IntelliCut motor raises power when the grass thickens. Three-year warranty if you register within 30 days.

Worx’s own pages also claim 250 and 300 m² for the same mower, which is flagged, and a second battery is extra.

For a lawn up to 200 m² and anyone who finds mowers heavy, it is the one.

Strengths

  • 10 kg with battery, the lightest full mower here
  • Six heights up to 75 mm for a long first cut
  • Three-year warranty on registration

Limitations

  • Worx's own pages quote 200, 250 and 300 m² for the same mower
  • One 4.0 Ah battery; a second is extra

Good for

  • a small lawn and a shed with Worx 20 V tools
  • anyone who finds mowers heavy to lift

Look elsewhere if

  • a lawn over 200 m² on one battery

Bosch’s small brushless mower on the Power for All 18 V battery that also runs its hedge trimmers, drills and Gardena tools: a 32 cm cut, five heights from 25 to 65 mm by one lever, a 35 l fabric bag and a mulch plug, with a 4.0 Ah battery and AL 18V-44 charger in this kit.

Bosch’s UK page gives neither area per charge nor weight; retailers say 150 m² and 10.7 or 11.5 kg, all flagged.

For a garden that already has Bosch or Gardena 18 V batteries, it is the obvious mower.

Strengths

  • Brushless motor and a mulch plug at the small end of the range
  • Battery works in other Power for All tools, including other brands
  • Five cutting heights from one lever

Limitations

  • Bosch does not publish area per charge or weight for the UK kit
  • 32 cm means more passes on anything over a small lawn

Good for

  • a lawn up to about 150 m² and a shed with other 18 V Bosch tools

Look elsewhere if

  • a lawn you mow in sections over 200 m²

Einhell states the lawn size plainly, 200 m², and the weight, 10.9 kg, for a brushless 33 cm mower with five heights from 25 to 65 mm and a 30 l box with a fill indicator, supplied with a 4.0 Ah Power X-Change battery and a fast charger. That battery fits more tools than any other system here.

The 30 l box is the smallest among the full-size mowers, and the listing adds 300 g to Einhell’s weight.

For a 150 to 200 m² lawn and a garage full of Einhell, or about to be, it is the value buy.

Strengths

  • Battery platform with the widest range of tools in this group
  • Brushless motor and a fill indicator at a low price
  • Einhell states the lawn size plainly: 200 m²

Limitations

  • Smallest box here at 30 l
  • Weight figures differ by 300 g between Einhell and the listing

Good for

  • a 150 to 200 m² lawn and a Power X-Change drill in the garage

Look elsewhere if

  • long or wet grass, where a 30 l box fills fast

Two 20 V batteries at once make 40 V: a 34 cm deck, six heights from 20 to 70 mm, the lowest cut in the group, a rear roller for stripes, a 30 l bag and 230 m² per charge by Worx’s figure, with both 2.0 Ah batteries and a dual charger in the box. Three-year warranty on registration.

The motor is brushed, the 30 l bag is small for a 34 cm deck, and the weight is 11.1 kg by Worx and 12 by the listing.

For a lawn you want striped short, it is the only one here that does it.

Strengths

  • Two batteries in the box and a dual charger
  • 20 mm minimum for a short formal cut, roller for stripes
  • Three-year warranty on registration

Limitations

  • Brushed motor
  • 30 l bag on a 34 cm deck fills quickly
  • Weight figures differ by nearly a kilo

Good for

  • a 150 to 230 m² lawn you want striped

Look elsewhere if

  • someone who already owns one PowerShare battery and wants to use it; this needs two

The big one: a 42 cm cut, a 50 l bin with an indicator flap, ten heights from 30 to 80 mm, and a 48 V 2.0 Ah battery that Gtech rates at up to 40 minutes with a one-hour charge, which is the more honest way to state it. 13.5 kg, two-year warranty.

The heaviest here, and the battery fits nothing else.

For a lawn around 300 m² that you want finished without stopping, it is the one.

Strengths

  • 42 cm cut and a 50 l bin halve the passes and the emptying
  • Run time and charge time stated by the maker
  • Heights to 80 mm for an overgrown lawn

Limitations

  • 13.5 kg, the heaviest here
  • Proprietary battery; no other tools share it

Good for

  • a medium lawn up to about 300 m² mown in one go

Look elsewhere if

  • a tiny lawn or a narrow side gate

Not a lawnmower so much as a mowing strimmer: 3.5 kg assembled, a 25 cm blade, two heights (40 and 50 mm), no box, clippings mulched in, about 30 minutes on a four-hour charge, two-year warranty.

Gtech’s own pages give the width as 25 and 27 cm and the weight as 3.5 against the listing’s 3.2, both flagged.

For a front garden, a verge or a flat’s patch of grass, it is the one that will actually be used.

Strengths

  • 3.5 kg; anyone can lift and store it
  • No box to empty, nothing to assemble
  • Two-year warranty

Limitations

  • Two heights only, 40 or 50 mm
  • Four hours to charge for thirty minutes of mowing
  • Gtech's own pages disagree on the cutting width

Good for

  • a front garden, a strip beside a path, a flat with a patch of grass

Look elsewhere if

  • anything you would call a lawn

How to choose

  1. Lawn size. Under 50 m²: SLM50. Up to 200: Worx WG733E, Bosch, Einhell. Up to 230 and striped: Worx WG779E.2. Up to about 300: Gtech CLM50.
  2. Battery platform. Bosch, Flymo or Gardena 18 V batteries: Bosch. Worx 20 V: either Worx. Einhell: Einhell. None: Gtech.
  3. Brushless. Worx WG733E, Bosch, Einhell.
  4. Heights. Shortest cut: WG779E.2 (20 mm). Longest: CLM50 (80 mm).
  5. Weight. 10 kg: WG733E. 13.5: CLM50. 3.5: SLM50.

Who should keep the corded mower

If the lawn is under 60 m² and the socket is by the back door, a corded mower is lighter, cheaper and never flat. Cordless earns its price when the lead reaches a bed, a pond or a second lawn.

Which one, by situation

  • Small lawn, lightest: Worx WG733E.
  • Bosch 18 V batteries already: Bosch Rotak 18V-32.
  • Einhell batteries already, or wanted: Einhell GE-CM 18/33 Li.
  • Stripes: Worx WG779E.2.
  • Medium lawn, one charge: Gtech CLM50.
  • A strip of grass: Gtech SLM50.

How big a lawn will a cordless mower do on one charge?

What the maker says, on dry grass cut regularly, and less when it is long or wet. The makers here state 150 m² (Bosch, by retailers), 200 m² (Worx WG733E, Einhell) and 230 m² (Worx WG779E.2) per charge; Gtech states 40 minutes for the CLM50 instead. A typical British semi has 50 to 150 m² of back lawn, so any of them will do it; the difference is whether you finish the front as well.

Does brushless matter?

A brushless motor runs cooler, lasts longer and manages the battery better, which is why Bosch, Worx (WG733E) and Einhell fit one and say so. The Worx WG779E.2 is brushed. For a small lawn cut fortnightly it is a nice-to-have; for a long lawn or a mower you will keep ten years, it is worth the difference.

What do the battery platforms mean?

The battery that comes with the mower fits other tools from the same system: Bosch uses Power for All (shared with Flymo, Gardena and others), Worx uses PowerShare across its 20 V range, Einhell's Power X-Change fits hundreds of Einhell tools. Gtech's batteries fit only Gtech. If you already own one of these systems, buy the mower that uses it and a bare second battery.

What cutting height do I need?

Most lawns are kept at 30 to 50 mm; a formal lawn at 20 to 25. The first cut of spring on long grass wants 65 to 80. The Worx mowers span the widest range, 25 to 75 and 20 to 70 mm; the Gtech CLM50 goes to 80; the SLM50 stops at 50 and does not go below 40.
