Kärcher K 4 Classic vs Bosch UniversalAquatak 135: the two mid-size pressure washers, on bar, litres and hose

Two air-cooled washers at the same point in the market: Kärcher's plain K 4 with 130 bar, 420 litres an hour and two lances, and Bosch's UniversalAquatak with 135 bar, 450 litres an hour and one nozzle that twists between three jets. Which one suits a patio and a car comes down to flow, hose length, weight and whether you want to swap lances or twist a nozzle.

135 bar and 450 litres an hour from 1,900 watts: the highest flow of any washer on our shortlist, which is what rinses a patio quickly. A water filter is included; a detergent nozzle takes a 450 ml bottle.

Strengths

  • 450 l/h, more water than any Kärcher here
  • One nozzle does three jobs, nothing to swap
  • 7 m hose

Limitations

  • Air-cooled motor
  • Weight figures differ by over a kilo

Good for

  • a car, bikes and a medium patio without the Kärcher price

Look elsewhere if

  • weekly heavy use; the water-cooled Kärchers are built for that

20 to 130 bar and 420 litres an hour from 1,800 watts, with Kärcher’s figure of 30 square metres an hour. Pressure is set by twisting the Vario Power lance; the Dirt Blaster lance does stone.

Thirty litres an hour and five bar separate them. On a drive the Bosch is a little quicker; on a car the Kärcher’s fan lance is a little gentler.

Strengths

  • Same 130 bar and 420 l/h as the dearer K 4s
  • 4.6 kg; a third the weight of the Power Control
  • Telescopic handle, lances stow on board

Limitations

  • Air-cooled motor, for regular rather than heavy use
  • 6 m hose, not 8
  • Pressure changed by twisting the lance, not on the gun

Good for

  • a patio and a car a few times a year at the K 4 pressure

Look elsewhere if

  • weekly use on a big drive

Hose, cable and weight

Seven metres of hose on the Bosch, six on the Kärcher, five metres of cable on the Kärcher. The Kärcher is 4.6 kg without accessories against the Bosch’s seven or so, and the Kärcher’s telescopic handle and wheels make it the one you move without thinking.

Nozzle or lances

The Bosch’s single nozzle twists through fan, rotary and point jets. The Kärcher gives you two lances and a twist for pressure on the first. The Bosch is simpler; the Kärcher’s Dirt Blaster is the better rotary tool for paving, and its Vario fan pattern the better one for paintwork.

Which one, by job

  • Car first, patio sometimes: Kärcher K 4 Classic.
  • Patio and drive first: Bosch UniversalAquatak 135.
  • Lightest to carry and store: Kärcher K 4 Classic.
  • Nothing to swap: Bosch UniversalAquatak 135.
  • Weekly use on a big drive: neither; the water-cooled K 4 Power Control.

Which cleans faster?

The Bosch moves more water, 450 litres an hour against 420, at a slightly higher 135 bar, so it rinses a patio a little faster. Kärcher states 30 square metres an hour for the K 4 Classic; Bosch does not state an area figure. The difference is minutes on a patio, not a different class of machine.

Which is easier to use?

The Bosch's 3-in-1 nozzle twists between fan, rotary and point jets without swapping anything. The Kärcher has a Vario Power lance you twist for pressure and a separate Dirt Blaster rotary lance you click on. One nozzle is simpler; two lances give a cleaner fan pattern for a car.

Which is lighter?

Kärcher states 4.6 kg without accessories. Bosch states 7.9 kg and the listing 6.55, so the Bosch is heavier either way, by two to three kilos. The Kärcher also has a telescopic handle and wheels for the shed.

Which lasts longer?

Both are air-cooled motors for occasional use, and both carry two-year warranties. The water-cooled K 4 Power Control is the step up for weekly use; neither of these two is built for that.
