Best pressure washers: six machines from 110 to 135 bar for cars, patios and drives, on bar, litres and hose
Pressure washers are sold on a bar figure, and bar is the least useful number on the box. Cleaning speed comes from flow in litres per hour as much as pressure, reach from the hose, and life from whether the motor is water-cooled. Six machines from Kärcher, Bosch and Vytronix, from a 3.4 kg K 2 for a car to a K 4 with an 8 m hose.

Pressure and flow are the makers’ maximum figures. Weight is flagged wherever the maker and the listing disagree, which is on four of the six; Kärcher’s weights exclude accessories. The Vytronix’s flow conflicts between its own product page and its manual.
Bar, litres and the hose
Pressure, in bar, is how hard the water hits. Flow, in litres per hour, is how much of it arrives. Dirt is lifted by pressure and carried away by flow, and a machine with 130 bar and 360 l/h cleans a patio noticeably slower than one with 130 bar and 420, because the rinse is slower. Kärcher’s own area-per-hour figures track flow: 20 m²/h for the K 2 at 360 l/h, 30 for the K 4s at 420.
The lance sets the pressure you actually use: a fan jet for paint and glass, a rotary jet (Kärcher’s Dirt Blaster, Bosch’s rotary setting) for stone. The hose sets how far you get from the machine. And the motor’s cooling sets how long the machine lasts under use: air-cooled for occasional, water-cooled for regular.

Kärcher’s mid-range all-rounder: 20 to 130 bar and 420 l/h from a 1.8 kW water-cooled motor, a trigger gun with a display that steps through three pressure settings so you do not swap lances between the car and the patio, both the Vario Power and Dirt Blaster lances, and on this Flex version an 8 m hose and a 0.5 l detergent tank. Five-metre cable.
It is heavy, and the listing’s 11.5 kg is lighter than the 13.1 kg reviewers weigh in use.
For a house with a car, a patio and garden furniture, it is the one to buy once.
Strengths
- Pressure chosen on the gun, not by swapping lances
- Water-cooled motor, the part that outlasts the cheap ones
- 8 m hose and on-board storage
Limitations
- Heavy, and the weight is disputed
- Dearer than the K 4 Classic for the same pressure and flow
Good for
- a patio, a car and garden furniture in one weekend

The same 130 bar and 420 l/h and the same two lances in the plain body: no Power Control gun, an air-cooled 1,800 W motor, a 6 m hose, a 5 m cable, a telescopic handle, and 4.6 kg without accessories, which is a third of the Power Control.
Pressure is set by twisting the lance, and the air-cooled motor is for regular rather than heavy use.
For the same jobs a few times a year, it is the sensible saving.
Strengths
- Same 130 bar and 420 l/h as the dearer K 4s
- 4.6 kg; a third the weight of the Power Control
- Telescopic handle, lances stow on board
Limitations
- Air-cooled motor, for regular rather than heavy use
- 6 m hose, not 8
- Pressure changed by twisting the lance, not on the gun
Good for
- a patio and a car a few times a year at the K 4 pressure
Look elsewhere if
- weekly use on a big drive

The K 4 built for area: 130 bar and 420 l/h, water-cooled, an 8 m PremiumFlex hose that does not kink, a built-in water filter, and the eco!Booster lance, a wide rotary nozzle that Kärcher says cleans faster than the fan lance at the same flow without the stripes a Dirt Blaster leaves on soft stone. Kärcher lists 11.8 kg without accessories.
There is no Power Control gun, so pressure is set by lance, and the five-year guarantee the listing mentions is not confirmed on Kärcher’s page.
For decking, a large patio or a block-paved drive, it is the fastest here.
Strengths
- eco!Booster lance for patios without the Dirt Blaster's stripes
- 8 m PremiumFlex hose that does not kink
- Water-cooled motor and a built-in filter
Limitations
- No Power Control gun; pressure is set by lance
- Guarantee claim needs checking
Good for
- large patios and decking where speed matters

Bosch’s mid-size machine: 135 bar and 450 l/h, the highest flow here, from a 1,900 W motor, a 7 m hose, a water filter, a high-pressure detergent nozzle and a single 3-in-1 nozzle that twists between fan, rotary and point jets, so there is nothing to swap. Bosch says 7.9 kg; the listing 6.55.
The motor is air-cooled, and there is no low-pressure setting short of backing off the trigger.
For a car, bikes and a medium patio without the Kärcher price, it is the one.
Strengths
- 450 l/h, more water than any Kärcher here
- One nozzle does three jobs, nothing to swap
- 7 m hose
Limitations
- Air-cooled motor
- Weight figures differ by over a kilo
Good for
- a car, bikes and a medium patio without the Kärcher price
Look elsewhere if
- weekly heavy use; the water-cooled Kärchers are built for that

The compact Kärcher: 110 bar and 360 l/h from 1.4 kW, 3.4 kg, a one-way spray lance and a Dirt Blaster, and a 3 m hose. It fits in a kitchen cupboard and cleans a car, bins and a few square metres of paving.
The hose keeps the machine at your heels, the motor is air-cooled, and Kärcher rates it at 20 m² an hour, two thirds of a K 4.
For a flat with a parking space, or a small paved yard, it is the right size.
Strengths
- 3.4 kg and small enough for a cupboard
- Dirt Blaster lance included
- The cheapest Kärcher
Limitations
- 3 m hose
- Air-cooled motor, for occasional use
- Half the area per hour of a K 4
Good for
- a flat, a car, a small paved yard

The budget machine with the brand-name numbers: 135 bar maximum and 90 bar working pressure, 1,800 W, a 6 m hose, a 5 m cable, and a jet nozzle, turbo nozzle, detergent nozzle and brush in the box, all clipping to the body. Vytronix’s page says 480 l/h and 7.8 kg; its manual says 6 l/min and 9.1 kg.
The one-year warranty and the disagreement between page and manual tell you what it is.
For a car and a path two or three times a year, it does the job at the lowest price here.
Strengths
- A turbo nozzle and brush included at the lowest price here
- 6 m hose, 5 m cable
Limitations
- Working pressure is 90 bar; 135 is the peak
- Flow and weight figures conflict between page and manual
- One-year warranty
Good for
- a few washes a year of a car and a path
Look elsewhere if
- anyone who wants the figures to be dependable

Who should hire instead
A drive that is cleaned once every three years, or a one-off before selling the house, is a day’s hire of a petrol machine, not a purchase. The electric machines here are for a car monthly and a patio each spring.

How many bar do I need?
Less than you think. A car wants 100 to 120 bar with a fan lance; a patio or decking 120 to 130 with a rotary nozzle; a green drive the same, slowly. Every machine here is in that range. The difference you will notice is flow: 420 or 450 litres an hour rinses twice as fast as 360.
What does water-cooled mean and does it matter?
The motor is cooled by the water passing through, rather than by air, so it runs cooler and lasts longer under long use. Kärcher fits it to the K 4 Power Control and the K 4 WCM here, not to the K 4 Classic or K 2. For a patio once a year it does not matter; for weekly car washing and a big drive it is the part that decides the machine's life.
Does the hose length matter?
More than bar. A 3 m hose on the K 2 means the machine follows you round the car; 6 m reaches most of a patio from one tap; 8 m does a drive. You can buy extension hoses, but the connectors are brand-specific and not cheap.
Can I use it with a water butt?
Only with a suction hose accessory and a machine that supports it; every maker here says mains pressure is the default and sets a maximum inlet temperature of 40 °C. Check the manual before using anything but a tap.
