Gtech CLM50 review: the 42 cm cordless mower, its 50 litre bin and the forty minutes Gtech promises

The widest mower on our cordless shortlist: a 42 cm cut, a 50 litre bin with a fill flap, ten heights from 30 to 80 mm and a 48 V battery that Gtech rates for up to 40 minutes and recharges in an hour. This review is about what the extra width saves, why Gtech quotes minutes rather than square metres, what 13.5 kg means at the back step, and the battery nothing else in the shed will use.

A cordless rotary mower with a 42 cm cut, ten cutting heights from 30 to 80 mm, a 50 litre grass bin with an indicator flap, and a removable 48 V 2.0 Ah lithium battery with its charger. Gtech states up to 40 minutes’ run time, a one-hour charge, a blade speed of 2,800 rpm, 13.5 kg and a two-year warranty. From Gtech’s product page and user manual.

Strengths

  • 42 cm cut and a 50 l bin halve the passes and the emptying
  • Run time and charge time stated by the maker
  • Heights to 80 mm for an overgrown lawn

Limitations

  • 13.5 kg, the heaviest here
  • Proprietary battery; no other tools share it

Good for

  • a medium lawn up to about 300 m² mown in one go

Look elsewhere if

  • a tiny lawn or a narrow side gate

The width

Forty-two centimetres against 32 to 34 for most cordless mowers is about a quarter more lawn per pass. On a rectangular lawn that saves roughly one pass in five, which is time and battery both. The cost is a wider machine to get through a side gate or between beds; measure the narrowest point on the route from the shed before buying.

The bin

Fifty litres, against 30 to 35 for the others on our shortlist, with a flap that shows when it is full. On a lawn where you empty a small box three or four times, the CLM50 halves the stops. A full bin is also heavy; lifting 50 litres of wet clippings is a two-handed job.

Minutes, not square metres

Gtech rates the battery in time: up to 40 minutes. Other makers give an area per charge, and the figures vary between their own pages. Forty minutes at 42 cm is more ground than the same time at 33 cm, so the CLM50 covers more per charge in practice even though its 48 V 2.0 Ah battery holds about 96 watt-hours by arithmetic, more than the 72 or 80 of a single 18 or 20 V 4.0 Ah pack. The one-hour charge is unusually short and means one battery is usually enough.

Heights

Ten steps from 30 to 80 mm. The top end is the useful one: an April lawn or one left over a fortnight’s holiday comes down in stages without scalping. The bottom, 30 mm, is a normal family-lawn height; for a very short formal cut, the Worx WG779E.2 goes to 20 mm.

The weight and the battery

13.5 kg is the heaviest on our shortlist. Pushed on a flat lawn it is not felt; lifted up a step or onto a hook it is. The battery is Gtech’s own, which is fine if the CLM50 is your only cordless garden tool and a cost if you already own a different platform.

Who should buy it

Someone with a medium lawn who mows it in one session, finds emptying a small box the worst part of the job, and has a level route from shed to grass.

Who should not

A small lawn, where the extra width and weight buy nothing; a garden reached up steps or through a narrow gate; and anyone already invested in Bosch, Einhell or Worx batteries, who should stay on that platform.

How much lawn will one charge cut?

Gtech does not give an area; it gives up to 40 minutes of run time. That is the more honest figure, because area depends on grass length and how often you mow. At 42 cm wide, each pass covers more ground than the 32 to 34 cm mowers, so the same minutes go further. If 40 minutes is not enough, the one-hour charge means a cup of tea finishes the job.

Is 13.5 kg heavy?

For a cordless mower, yes: it is the heaviest on our shortlist, three and a half kilos more than the Worx WG733E. On a flat lawn behind a level door it makes no difference once you are pushing. If the mower has to go up steps or hang on a wall, it is the figure that matters.

Can I use the battery in other tools?

Only in Gtech's own garden tools. The 48 V 2.0 Ah pack is Gtech's design, not Power for All, Power X-Change or PowerShare. If you already own one of those platforms, a mower on it saves buying a second set of batteries.

Why go as high as 80 mm?

For the first cut of spring and for a lawn left during a holiday. Cutting more than a third of the grass at once stresses it, so a mower that starts at 80 mm can bring long grass down over two or three cuts. Gtech gives ten steps between 30 and 80 mm.
