Catit Flower Fountain vs Catit PIXI Fountain: the two Catit cat fountains, on capacity, power and cleaning

Catit sells the two fountains most UK cats drink from. They share a filter and a price bracket and differ in everything else: three litres against two and a half, a mains pump against USB, a flower top with three flows against a cat face with a level window and a light. The choice comes down to how many cats, where the socket is, and whether you want to see the level from the door.

Capacities, flows, filters and power are from Catit’s pages. The PIXI’s size and weight are flagged because Catit’s own pages give two sets of figures and the listing a third; the Flower’s size is the listing’s.

Three litres, which is about a week for one cat allowing for evaporation and a few days for two. The petal top gives a bubbling stream, a gentle flow or a calm surface depending on how it is fitted.

Strengths

  • Three litres, a week for one cat
  • Three flow settings
  • Catit publishes the filter schedule

Limitations

  • Plastic bowl, which some cats and some owners dislike
  • Mains cable from the pump

Good for

  • a first fountain for a cat that ignores a bowl

Look elsewhere if

  • a house that wants stainless or ceramic

Two and a half litres, a week for one cat, with a window in the front so you can see it and a light that tells you when it is low. Three drinking spots in a shallow bowl that does not press on whiskers.

Half a litre is the difference between topping up on Saturday and on Friday. For two cats, the Flower.

Strengths

  • USB power, so it can run from a power bank in a cut
  • Level window and low-water light
  • Detachable pump for cleaning

Limitations

  • Half a litre less than the Flower
  • Catit's own dimensions and weights disagree

Good for

  • a cat that likes to see the water and an owner who likes to see the level

Look elsewhere if

  • two cats

Power and placement

The Flower’s pump runs from the mains. The PIXI’s runs from a 5 V USB adapter at under a watt, which puts it on a power bank in a cut and lets it sit anywhere a phone charger reaches. If the fountain’s spot is a long way from a wall socket, that decides it.

Cleaning

Both want a weekly rinse of bowl and pump and a monthly filter. The PIXI’s pump pulls out and its bowl is one shallow piece; the Flower has the petal top and the dome to scrub as well. The PIXI is the one you will keep cleaning in March.

Which one, by household

  • Two cats: Catit Flower Fountain.
  • One cat, forgetful refilling: Catit PIXI Fountain, for the window and the light.
  • No socket nearby: Catit PIXI Fountain, on USB.
  • Wants the most flow options: Catit Flower Fountain.
  • Hates cleaning: Catit PIXI Fountain.

Do they use the same filter?

Both use Catit's triple-action filter of cotton, activated carbon and ion-exchange resin, changed monthly by Catit's instruction. The PIXI's is 8.5 by 8.5 centimetres; check the pack says PIXI or Flower, as the shapes differ.

Which is quieter?

Both pumps are small submersibles and both are quiet when the water is topped up; every fountain gurgles when the level drops below the intake. The PIXI's window and its red nose light exist to stop that happening, which in practice makes it the quieter one in a house that forgets to refill.

Which is easier to clean?

The PIXI: its pump detaches, the bowl is shallow and the parts are few. The Flower has the petal top, the dome and the bowl, and the petal pockets collect slime. Both are weekly jobs.

Can the PIXI run without a socket?

It runs from any USB adapter at under a watt, which means a power bank in a power cut or a USB socket on a kitchen extension lead. The Flower needs its mains pump plugged into a wall socket.

Best pet water fountains: six fountains from 2 to 7.5 litres compared on capacity, filter, power and material

A fountain gets a cat to drink, which is most of the point, and then asks you to clean it weekly and buy filters monthly. What decides which one is capacity against the animals drinking, the filter and how often the maker says to change it, whether the pump runs from the mains, USB or a battery, and the bowl's material. Six fountains from Catit, Cat Mate and PetSafe, on the makers' figures.

Best automatic pet feeders: six feeders from a two-bowl timer to a microchip lock, by what each actually does

Automatic feeder is one name for four machines: a lidded bowl on a timer for wet food, a tray that turns to the next meal, a hopper that drops measured kibble, and a lid that opens only for the right cat. Which you need depends on the food, how long you are away and how many animals eat. Six feeders from Catit, Cat Mate, PetSafe, Petlibro and Sure Petcare, on the makers' figures.

SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder review: the lid that opens for one cat, and what it does and does not solve

Not an automatic feeder in the usual sense: nothing is scheduled. The SureFeed's lid slides open for the cat whose microchip or collar tag it has learned and shuts behind it, so a diet cat keeps its food and a greedy housemate or the dog keeps out. This review is about what the lock changes, how the sealed bowl works for wet food, what the batteries last, and what you still do yourself.
