Best automatic pet feeders: six feeders from a two-bowl timer to a microchip lock, by what each actually does

Automatic feeder is one name for four machines: a lidded bowl on a timer for wet food, a tray that turns to the next meal, a hopper that drops measured kibble, and a lid that opens only for the right cat. Which you need depends on the food, how long you are away and how many animals eat. Six feeders from Catit, Cat Mate, PetSafe, Petlibro and Sure Petcare, on the makers' figures.

Figures are the makers’ where a maker publishes them (Catit, Closer Pets for Cat Mate, PetSafe, Petlibro, Sure Petcare). The PetSafe’s power is flagged because PetSafe UK sells the mains adaptor separately while the listing says it is included.

Four machines with one name

A bowl timer is a lidded bowl that opens at a set time, with an ice pack underneath: wet food, one or two meals, no electronics to speak of. A tray feeder turns a carousel of compartments to an opening on a schedule: wet or dry, four to six meals, ice packs again. A hopper feeder holds a bag’s worth of kibble and drops a measured portion into a bowl: dry only, a week or more, the type that has an app. And a microchip feeder does not schedule anything: it opens only for the pet whose chip it knows, which is the only answer to a cat stealing a diet cat’s food.

Decide the food first, because wet food rules out the hoppers. Then the longest absence. Then whether another animal is the problem.

Six compartments on a tray that rotates to the opening at the times you set in the Catit app over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, two ice packs for the meals waiting their turn, mains power with four C batteries (not included) as a four-day backup, and a two-year warranty. Catit publishes all of that; it does not publish the compartment size, and the listing gives a 3.8 l total.

Six meals is six meals: two days for a cat fed three times, three for one fed twice. The ice packs keep food cool, not cold.

For a cat on pouches whose owner works unpredictable hours, it is the one that moves the schedule from a phone.

Strengths

  • Wet or dry, six meals, scheduled from a phone
  • Ice packs included
  • Battery backup for a power cut

Limitations

  • Six meals is the limit; a weekend away, not a week
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only
  • Compartment size not published

Good for

  • a cat on wet food and an owner who works late

Look elsewhere if

  • a week's holiday or a dog

The large hopper: 24 cups of kibble, up to twelve meals a day, each portion anywhere from 29 to 946 ml, a slow-feed mode that spreads a meal over fifteen minutes for a dog that inhales, a stainless bowl and parts that go in the dishwasher. Programmed on the unit, no app. PetSafe UK’s page sells the mains adaptor separately and the feeder runs on four D cells; the listing says adaptor included, so that fact is flagged.

Dry food only, and nothing can be changed from away.

For a dog or a cat on kibble, for a week, with a neighbour checking water, it is the one.

Strengths

  • Portions from a tablespoon to nearly a litre, so it suits a cat or a dog
  • Slow feed for a gulper
  • Twelve meals a day

Limitations

  • Dry food only
  • Mains adaptor sold separately by PetSafe
  • No remote control

Good for

  • a dog or a cat on kibble, for a week or more

  • wet food or an owner who wants to feed from a phone

Not a timer at all. The lid slides open when the cat whose microchip, or RFID collar tag, it has learned puts its head in, and closes when it leaves; it stores up to 32 pets, seals a 400 ml bowl (two pouches, or a split bowl for wet and dry) against flies and drying, runs about six months on four C cells, and carries a three-year warranty, all by Sure Petcare’s page.

You still fill the bowl, and the cat must be chipped or tagged.

For a cat on prescription food in a house with another cat or a dog, it is the only feeder that solves the problem.

Strengths

  • Solves the multi-pet problem no timer can
  • Sealed lid keeps wet food fresh for hours
  • Three-year warranty

Limitations

  • One bowl, no schedule: you still fill it
  • Needs the cat chipped or wearing the tag

Good for

  • a cat on special food in a two-cat or cat-and-dog house

Look elsewhere if

  • an owner who wants timed meals while away

Five bowls of 330 g under a lid, four of them served at times you set on a digital clock, the fifth open from the start, with twin ice packs under the tray and three AA cells that the retailers say last a year. Lid and bowl are dishwasher safe; stainless inserts are an optional extra; three-year guarantee.

Four timed meals, then it is empty, and the schedule is set on the feeder.

For a weekend away with a cat on wet food, and no interest in Wi-Fi, it is the one.

Strengths

  • Wet food for up to two days with the ice packs
  • No mains, no Wi-Fi, nothing to pair
  • Three-year guarantee

Limitations

  • Four timed meals, then it is empty
  • Timer is set on the unit, not a phone

Good for

  • a weekend away with a cat on pouches

  • remote changes or a week's absence

A small hopper, 2 litres, with up to six meals a day set on the unit, a press-to-lock lid and a rubber rotor that keeps ants out of the chute, running on batteries (not included; the listing claims up to 180 days) or the adapter in the box. 19 centimetres square, 1.6 kg. Petlibro describes the design on its page; the power figures are the listing’s.

Two litres feeds one cat for about a week, not two cats, and the warranty is one year.

For a single cat on dry food and an owner who wants no account, it is the sensible small feeder.

Strengths

  • Small footprint, 19 cm square
  • Battery or mains
  • Lid locks against a determined cat

Limitations

  • 2 litres is a week for one cat, not two
  • Battery life and type are listing figures
  • One-year warranty

Good for

  • one cat on dry food and an owner who does not want an app

Look elsewhere if

  • two cats or a dog

Two 400 g bowls, each under a lid released by its own 48-hour mechanical timer, an ice pack under the food, lids and bowls dishwasher-proof, battery powered, three-year guarantee. Twist, fill, close.

Two meals is the whole story.

For the night you will be back after midnight, or two cats fed at once, it is the simplest thing that works.

Strengths

  • Nothing to programme beyond twisting a dial
  • Wet food under a lid with ice
  • Three-year guarantee

Limitations

  • Two meals and that is all
  • Timers are mechanical, 48 hours maximum

Good for

  • one day away, or two cats fed at once

Look elsewhere if

  • anything longer than a night

How to choose

  1. Food. Wet: Catit PIXI, Cat Mate C500 or C200, SureFeed. Dry: PetSafe, Petlibro, oneisall.
  2. Absence. A night: C200. A weekend: C500, PIXI. A week on kibble: PetSafe, Petlibro.
  3. Another animal eating it. SureFeed, and nothing else.
  4. Remote changes. Catit PIXI.
  5. Power cut. Batteries: Cat Mate, SureFeed, Petlibro. Backup: Catit PIXI. PetSafe runs on batteries by default.

Who should buy a bowl and a neighbour instead

For a single night, a full bowl of kibble put down late does what the C200 does. The feeders earn their place when the cat is on wet food, overeats, or has to be away from another animal’s bowl.

Which one, by situation

  • Wet food, unpredictable hours: Catit PIXI Smart 6-meal.
  • Kibble, a week, a dog: PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed.
  • Diet cat, greedy housemate: SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder.
  • Weekend, pouches, no mains: Cat Mate C500.
  • One cat, kibble, no app: Petlibro Air.
  • One late night: Cat Mate C200.

Can an automatic feeder do wet food?

Only the tray and bowl types, with ice packs: the Catit PIXI 6-meal, Cat Mate C500 and C200, and the SureFeed's sealed bowl. Hopper feeders (PetSafe, Petlibro) are kibble only. Wet food under an ice pack is good for a day, two at a push in a cool room; none of these is a fridge.

How long can I leave a cat with a feeder?

The feeder is the easy part. A hopper feeder holds a week or two of kibble; the tray feeders hold two to six meals. The limit is the cat: water, litter and company run out before food. A weekend is what these are for; a week needs a person as well as a machine.

Do I need an app?

For changing the schedule while away, yes: the Catit PIXI here. For a fixed routine, the feeders programmed on the unit (PetSafe, Petlibro) do the same thing and work when the Wi-Fi does not. The Cat Mate timers and the SureFeed need no programming at all.

What about a dog?

The PetSafe Simply Feed is the one here built for it: portions up to 946 ml and a slow-feed mode for a gulper. The rest are cat-sized; small dogs can use the SureFeed and the Cat Mate trays.

Best pet water fountains: six fountains from 2 to 7.5 litres compared on capacity, filter, power and material

A fountain gets a cat to drink, which is most of the point, and then asks you to clean it weekly and buy filters monthly. What decides which one is capacity against the animals drinking, the filter and how often the maker says to change it, whether the pump runs from the mains, USB or a battery, and the bowl's material. Six fountains from Catit, Cat Mate and PetSafe, on the makers' figures.

How to choose an automatic pet feeder: food type, meals and portions, capacity, power and the multi-pet problem

Automatic feeders are sold on a litre figure and an app, and most buyers find out at home that the litres are kibble only, the app needs the right Wi-Fi band, and the other cat eats everything. This guide explains the four kinds of feeder, how to read meals, portions and capacity, what powers them when the mains fails, and what to do when one pet steals another's food.
