Bowflex SelectTech 552i vs Hakeno 2 × 24 kg: the brand dial dumbbell against the budget pair

The same idea at two prices: a dumbbell that picks up plates from a tray by a dial or a twist, 15 settings to 24 kilograms. Bowflex sells one dumbbell with a manual and every figure published; Hakeno sells two with a listing and a three-year warranty claim. The decision is one or a pair, how much a checkable maker is worth, and what happens when something breaks.

Fifteen settings from 2 to 24 kg: 1 kg steps to 5, then 2 to 3 kg steps up, listed in the manual. The dial at each end selects, the tray holds the rest, and Bowflex publishes the dimensions and the loaded weight.

Strengths

  • Fifteen settings with 1 kg steps at the light end
  • Maker's figures published and consistent
  • Quieter than plate dumbbells

Limitations

  • Sold singly here; a pair is two purchases
  • 43 cm long at every weight, awkward for curls at 2 kg
  • Plastic housing does not like being dropped

Good for

  • one serious dumbbell for a flat
  • progressive training from 2 to 24 kg

Fifteen settings to 24 kg per dumbbell by the listing, selected by rotating the handle with a double lock, in storage docks, two in the box. The step spacing is not published.

Same headline numbers; only one of them is checkable.

Strengths

  • Two 24 kg dumbbells in one box
  • Fifteen settings, like the Bowflex
  • Listing offers three years

Limitations

  • No maker page; listing facts only
  • 43 cm long at every weight
  • Coated plates and a plastic handle

Good for

  • a heavy pair on a budget

  • anyone who wants a maker's figure to check

One dumbbell or two

The Bowflex listing is a single dumbbell; a pair is two purchases and a sum that buys three Hakeno pairs. If you will press and row from day one, the Hakeno’s pair is the practical argument. If you start with squats, rows and carries, one Bowflex is a complete gym for a while.

What you are paying for

The Bowflex premium buys a maker that publishes a manual, sells spares and has been making this mechanism for two decades. The Hakeno’s price buys the same idea with a listing’s promise behind it. For a flat where the dumbbells will be set down carefully on a mat, the cheaper pair will likely be fine; for a garage where they will be dropped, neither will.

Which one, by lifter

  • One dumbbell, for years: Bowflex SelectTech 552i.
  • A pair now, on a budget: Hakeno 2 × 24 kg.
  • Needs 1 kg steps at the light end: Bowflex, confirmed; Hakeno, unknown.
  • Wants a figure to hold the maker to: Bowflex.

Is the range really the same?

On paper: 2 to 24 kg in 15 settings for the Bowflex, with the steps listed in its manual; up to 24 kg in 15 settings for the Hakeno, with the steps not listed anywhere we could check. The Bowflex's 1 kg steps at the light end are confirmed; the Hakeno's spacing is not.

One or two?

This Bowflex listing is a single dumbbell; the Hakeno is a pair. For presses and rows you want two. A single Bowflex covers goblet squats, rows and carries and leaves a second purchase for later; the Hakeno gives you the pair now.

What breaks on an adjustable dumbbell?

The selector mechanism, from being dropped or set down on the tray at an angle. Bowflex's is a plastic-housed dial with a manual and spares; Hakeno's is a rotating handle with a double lock by the listing. Neither should ever be dropped.

Which is longer?

Both are 43 centimetres at every weight by their figures: Bowflex's from its manual, Hakeno's from the listing. At 2 kg that is a long dumbbell for curls on either.

Best adjustable dumbbells: six sets from a 12 kg beginner pair to the Bowflex 552i, on range, steps and length

An adjustable dumbbell replaces a rack you have no room for. The figures that matter are the weight range, how many settings sit inside it and how far apart they are, how the weight is changed, how long the dumbbell is at its lightest setting, and whether the listing is one dumbbell or two. Six sets from Bowflex and five smaller makers, from a 12 kg beginner pair to a 24 kg dial dumbbell.

A home gym in a flat: footprint, floor loading, weight limits and noise, with the figures that matter

Exercise kit for a flat is chosen by three constraints that never appear on the box: the floor space it takes in use and folded, the weight it puts through a floor shared with a neighbour, and the noise it makes at seven in the morning. This guide works through each with the makers' figures for a folding bike and adjustable dumbbells, and says what to buy first.

Sunny Health & Fitness Smart Folding X-Bike review: the 23.5 kg folding bike with a backrest, bands and an app

The one folding X-bike on our shortlist with a maker's page behind it: 14 magnetic levels, a padded seat with a mesh backrest, resistance bands clipped to the frame, Bluetooth to Sunny's app and a 135 kg rider limit, in a frame that weighs 23.5 kg. This review is about what the backrest and bands add, what 23.5 kg means for folding it every day, and what Sunny states and the listing supplies.
