Best bathroom scales: six body-composition scales from a no-app Salter to the eight-electrode Withings
Every scale here does the same trick: a small current through your feet estimates fat, muscle and water from how your body resists it. What differs is the maximum weight, the step size, whether it syncs by Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or not at all, how many people it remembers, and whether it measures your top half or guesses it. Six scales from Salter, Renpho, eufy and Withings.

† Figure from a retailer listing or otherwise awaiting confirmation from the manufacturer; other figures come from manufacturer manuals and leaflets.
Figures are the makers’ except for the Renpho, whose UK site has no page for this exact model, so its facts carry the listing and are marked pending. The Salter smart scale’s 17-metric count is also the listing’s; Salter’s page says weight, body fat, BMI, BMR and more.
What a smart scale measures, and what it estimates
Stand barefoot on four metal pads and the scale passes a tiny current up one leg and down the other. Fat resists it more than muscle and water, so from the resistance and your height, age and sex, it estimates body-fat percentage, muscle mass, water and the rest. The number is consistent enough to show a trend over weeks and sensitive enough to hydration that two readings an hour apart differ. None of the plain-platform scales here measures your arms or torso; they assume it from your legs.
The Withings BodyFit is the exception. A retractable handle carries four more electrodes, so current passes hand to hand and hand to foot as well, and arms, legs, torso and abdomen are measured separately. That is a different instrument, priced accordingly.
The rest of the decision is practical: how heavy a person it will weigh, how it gets the numbers to your phone if at all, how many people it remembers, and what powers it.

The cheapest Wi-Fi scale here: it uploads to the eufy app over your router whether or not your phone is nearby, with Bluetooth as a fallback. Sixteen measurements including heart rate, 50 g steps, a 200 kg limit (step on with more than 5 kg to wake it), and a display you can set to show the reading you care about first. Four AAA cells, rated by eufy at three to four months. It syncs to Apple Health, Google Fit and Fitbit.
The AAA cells are the running cost, and it is a plain four-electrode platform. eufy says 1.7 kg; the listing says 2.
For a family that wants automatic syncing without thinking about it, it is the buy.
Strengths
- Wi-Fi sync at a Bluetooth-scale price
- 200 kg capacity and 50 g steps
- You choose which reading shows first
Limitations
- Four AAA cells every few months
- Plain-platform bioimpedance: lower body measured, upper body estimated
Good for
- a family that wants automatic syncing
- Apple Health, Google Fit or Fitbit users
Look elsewhere if
- segmental analysis; that is the BodyFit

The British brand’s app scale: a 200 kg limit, eight user profiles recognised by weight, an athlete mode, a backlit display and Bluetooth to the free Salter Health app. The listing claims 17 metrics and a 15-year guarantee; Salter’s page lists the main readings and says “and more”, so both are flagged.
Bluetooth only, so the phone has to be in the room to sync.
For a heavier household, or anyone who wants a Salter with an app, it is the one.
Strengths
- 200 kg capacity
- Eight users, athlete mode
- Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi: no router setup
Limitations
- Bluetooth only, so the phone must be nearby to sync
- Some figures come from the listing, not Salter
Good for
- a family scale with profiles
- anyone over the 180 kg limit of most scales
Look elsewhere if
- automatic syncing without a phone in the room

No phone, no account: step on and the backlit display shows weight, then body fat, water, muscle, bone, BMI and BMR, seven readings from four electrodes, in 0.1 kg steps, for up to nine users, to 180 kg. Salter publishes all of it on the product page.
There is no history unless you keep one, and the limit is 180 kg.
For a shared bathroom where nobody wants another app, it is the sensible scale.
Strengths
- Seven metrics with no phone
- Nine users
- 0.1 kg steps
Limitations
- No history unless you write it down
- 180 kg limit
Good for
- someone who wants body-fat readings without an account
- a shared bathroom

The best-selling budget smart scale: 13 metrics in the Renpho Health app, 50 g steps, a 180 kg limit, unlimited users, three AAA cells and sync to Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit and Samsung Health. Renpho’s UK site lists only the newer Elis 1 L, so every figure here is the listing’s and is marked pending.
Bluetooth only, plain glass, and no maker page to check against.
For the lowest price that still puts a trend graph on your phone, it is the one.
Strengths
- Fifty-gram steps and 13 metrics at a low price
- Unlimited users through the app
- Syncs with Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit by Renpho's description
Limitations
- No maker page for this model; listing facts only
- Bluetooth only, phone must be present
- Plain glass with no athlete mode listed
Good for
- a cheap scale that talks to a fitness app
Look elsewhere if
- anyone who wants a maker-published specification

The same seven readings as the grey Salter in frosted black glass that hides footprints, with eight user profiles and an athlete mode, which the grey model lacks. 180 kg limit, no connectivity. Salter does not publish the graduation for this one.
No app, and no stated step size.
For a gym-goer who wants the athlete setting and nothing to pair, it is the alternative to the grey one.
Strengths
- Athlete mode, which the grey model lacks
- Frosted glass hides footprints
Limitations
- Graduation not published
- No connectivity
Good for
- a gym-goer who wants athlete mode without an app

- anyone who wants data on a phone

Eight electrodes, four of them in a handle that pulls up from the platform, and bioimpedance across 13 frequencies up to 800 kHz, so the scale measures arms, legs, torso and abdomen as six zones rather than inferring them. More than 40 metrics, 50 g steps, a 200 kg limit, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a rechargeable battery Withings rates at up to a year on USB-C, and a colour display that shows the key readings without a phone. Withings quotes the display at 2.8, 3.4 and 3.5 inches on different pages, which is flagged.
It costs as much as three ordinary smart scales and weighs 2.2 kg.
For anyone tracking muscle against fat seriously, including on weight-loss medication, it is the only scale here that measures what the others estimate.
Strengths
- Eight electrodes, six zones: segmental readings, not estimates
- Wi-Fi sync without a phone in the room
- Rechargeable, up to a year per charge
Limitations
- The price of three ordinary smart scales
- Display size is quoted inconsistently by Withings
- Heavy at 2.2 kg
Good for
- someone tracking muscle versus fat seriously, including on GLP-1 medication
- a household already in the Withings app
Look elsewhere if
- anyone who only wants weight and BMI
How to choose
- Maximum weight. 200 kg: eufy, Salter smart, Withings. 180 kg: the Salter analysers, Renpho.
- Syncing. Wi-Fi: eufy, Withings. Bluetooth: Salter smart, Renpho. None: the two Salter analysers.
- Users. Nine: Salter grey. Eight: Salter smart, Salter black. Unlimited in the app: Renpho.
- Power. Rechargeable: Withings. AAA cells: the rest.
- Upper body. Only the Withings.
Who should buy a plain scale instead
If you want a weight and nothing else, any digital scale with a 0.1 kg step does it and the body-fat estimate is noise you will learn to ignore. The scales here are for people who will look at a trend; a cheap plain scale is for people who will not.
Which one, by situation
- Family, automatic syncing: eufy Smart Scale P3.
- Over 180 kg, wants an app: Salter Smart Bluetooth Scale.
- Shared bathroom, no apps: Salter Digital Analyser (grey).
- Lowest price with a trend graph: Renpho Elis 1.
- Gym, athlete mode, no app: Salter Matte Black Analyser.
- Serious body composition: Withings BodyFit.

Are the body-fat numbers accurate?
They are repeatable, not accurate. A four-electrode scale measures your legs and estimates the rest, and hydration shifts the reading by a few percent day to day. Weigh at the same time each morning and watch the trend. The Withings BodyFit, with electrodes in a handle as well, measures the upper body rather than guessing it, which is the one real step up.
Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?
Bluetooth scales sync when your phone is in the room with the app open or recently opened; Wi-Fi scales upload on their own. If you weigh before you pick up your phone, Wi-Fi (eufy P3, Withings BodyFit). If you weigh with the phone in your hand anyway, Bluetooth is fine (Salter smart, Renpho).
What is graduation?
The smallest step the display shows: 50 g on the eufy, Renpho and Withings, 100 g on the Salters. It is a display step, not an accuracy claim; a 50 g scale is not more accurate, it just shows more digits.
Do I need an app?
Only if you want a history. The two Salter analyser scales show the same seven readings on the display and keep profiles for eight or nine people; you write down what you want to keep. For most households that is enough.
