Best mattress toppers for a double bed: foam and fibre from 2.5 to 10 cm, by what each one can fix

A topper is sold as one product and does three jobs: a fibre pad freshens a surface, a deep fibre topper softens a hard bed, and a two-layer foam topper changes how a tired mattress supports you. Buy the wrong kind and you get a hot, sagging or pointless layer. Six toppers for a UK double (135 by 190 cm) from Silentnight and three foam makers, compared on depth, fill, fixing and washing.

† Figure from a retailer listing or otherwise awaiting confirmation from the manufacturer; other figures come from manufacturer manuals and leaflets.

Depth is the figure on each listing, marked pending where the maker’s own page does not state it or states it differently; Silentnight’s Airmax page describes the fibre and the construction but does not fix a single depth. Fill and fixing for the Silentnight models are from Silentnight’s page. The three foam toppers have no manufacturer pages, so their facts carry the listing as source.

Three problems, three kinds of topper

A mattress that has gone soft in the middle has lost support. Nothing you lay on top will give it back, but a two-layer foam topper, a firm base layer under a memory-foam comfort layer, bridges the dip and spreads your weight, and buys a year or two. A mattress that is sound but too hard has the opposite problem: it holds you up and digs into hips and shoulders. That wants a soft layer, which is fibre or a few centimetres of memory foam. And a mattress that is fine but tired on the surface, or a child’s bed, wants a washable pad, which is what the thin quilted products are.

The fourth problem, heat, cuts across the other three. Memory foam holds warmth; gel infusions and mesh side panels help at the margins but do not make foam sleep like fibre. If you already overheat, choose fibre, or the thinnest foam that solves the problem.

The one topper here built like a small mattress: 3 centimetres of gel-infused memory foam over 5 centimetres of firmer support foam, inside a knitted cover that unzips along three sides and goes in the washing machine, with mesh side panels for airflow, four corner straps and a non-slip dotted base. The listing rates it medium.

It is foam, so it needs 48 to 72 hours to expand and air, and it sleeps warmer than the fibre toppers. There is no maker website, so every figure is the listing’s.

For a mattress that has gone firm or developed a dip, it is the one that will change how the bed supports you.

Strengths

  • 8 cm with a support layer, enough to change a firm or tired bed
  • Removable washable cover, straps and a grippy base

Limitations

  • Needs 48 to 72 hours to expand and air
  • No maker page; listing facts only

Good for

  • a firm or worn mattress that needs real softening
  • side sleepers with sore hips

Look elsewhere if

  • someone who sleeps hot and dislikes foam

The deepest comfort layer in the group: 5 centimetres of gel-infused memory foam, with 2 centimetres of bamboo-charcoal support foam under it, a bamboo-fibre and polyester zip cover, full-length elastic bands rather than corner straps, and a non-slip base. It weighs 6.8 kilograms by the listing, which tells you how much foam is in it.

Memory foam this deep is the warmest option here, and the slow sink is a taste. No maker page; listing facts only.

For a side sleeper on a hard bed, who wants hips and shoulders to disappear into the surface, it is the one.

Strengths

  • 5 cm of memory foam, the deepest comfort layer in this group
  • Zip-off washable cover and full-length bands

Limitations

  • Memory foam sleeps warmer than fibre
  • No maker page; listing facts only

Good for

  • a hard mattress and a side sleeper
  • someone who likes the slow sink of memory foam

Look elsewhere if

  • a hot sleeper

Silentnight’s deep fibre topper: a dual-layer hollowfibre fill in a box-stitched microfibre cover with air-mesh sides, elasticated straps and a two-year guarantee, fully machine washable. Silentnight’s page confirms the construction; the 10-centimetre depth is the listing’s.

Ten centimetres of fibre compresses where you lie, over months, in a way foam does not, and it needs deep fitted sheets from the first night.

For someone who wants the hotel feel, a visibly deep soft top on a firm bed, with the whole thing washable, it is the fibre choice.

Strengths

  • Deep fibre layer for a plush feel
  • Machine washable and strapped like the 5 cm
  • Two-year guarantee

Limitations

  • 10 cm of fibre compresses more over time than foam
  • Needs deep fitted sheets
  • Depth is the listing's figure

Good for

  • someone who wants a hotel-style plush top
  • a very firm mattress

Look elsewhere if

  • back-pain support, which is a foam job

The same topper at half the depth: hollowfibre, box-stitched microfibre cover, mesh sides, straps, machine washable, two-year guarantee, 1.5 kilograms. It softens a firm mattress without raising the bed enough to fight the sheets.

It will not do anything for a sagging mattress, and fibre flattens over time.

For a firm new mattress that needs taking the edge off, or a guest bed, it is the cheapest sensible topper here.

Strengths

  • Machine washable, the whole topper
  • Mesh sides for airflow on a hot sleeper's bed
  • Two-year guarantee from a UK maker

Limitations

  • Fibre flattens over time where you lie
  • Depth figure is from the listing; Silentnight's pages vary

Good for

  • a firm mattress that needs softening
  • a guest bed

Look elsewhere if

  • a sagging mattress, which needs foam

A quilted mattress pad with a thin layer of gel-infused memory foam and fibre fill, a bamboo-viscose top, a deep elastic skirt that fits like a sheet, and a whole-item machine wash. OEKO-TEX certified by the listing.

Three centimetres is not enough to change a firm bed, let alone a tired one, and there is no maker page.

For a slightly softer, washable surface on a mattress that is basically fine, it is the step up from a protector.

Strengths

  • Fitted skirt stops it sliding
  • Whole thing goes in the washing machine

Limitations

  • 3 cm is too thin to change a firm bed
  • No manufacturer specification page; listing facts only

Good for

  • a slightly softer surface and a washable layer

Look elsewhere if

  • a sagging mattress or back pain

Two and a half centimetres of hypoallergenic hollowfibre in a quilted polycotton cover with elasticated corner straps, machine washable, 1.2 kilograms, two-year guarantee by the listing. Silentnight’s page for this exact part was not found, so the facts are the listing’s.

It is a pad. It will not soften, support or lift anything.

For a child’s bed, a protector that is nicer than plastic, or a fresh surface on a good mattress, it is cheap and washable.

Strengths

  • Cheap, light and washable
  • Straps hold it like a fitted protector

Limitations

  • 2.5 cm will not soften or support anything
  • All figures from the listing

Good for

  • a mattress protector with a little padding
  • a child's bed

Look elsewhere if

  • anyone shopping for comfort or support

How to choose

  1. Name the problem. Sagging or too firm with pressure points: foam, two layers (Degrees of Comfort, Uspark). Firm but sound: fibre (Airmax 5 or 10). Fine, wants freshening: a pad (EHEYCIGA, Deep Sleep).
  2. Heat. Hot sleepers: fibre. Foam only as thin as the problem allows.
  3. Depth and sheets. Over 5 centimetres needs deep fitted sheets.
  4. Washing. Whole-topper wash: the Silentnight fibre toppers and the EHEYCIGA pad. Cover only: the foam toppers.
  5. Fixing. Full-length bands or a skirt hold better than corner straps on a slippery mattress.

Who should buy a new mattress instead

If the dip in the middle is deep enough to roll into, or the mattress is over eight years old, a topper is a plaster. An 8-centimetre foam topper costs a third of a budget mattress and buys a year; spend the money on the mattress if you can.

Which one, by situation

  • Dip in the middle, cannot replace yet: Degrees of Comfort 8 cm.
  • Hard bed, side sleeper: Uspark 7 cm.
  • Hard bed, hot sleeper: Silentnight Airmax 5 cm.
  • Wants plush, washable: Silentnight Airmax 10 cm.
  • Fine bed, washable layer: EHEYCIGA 3 cm.
  • Child’s bed or protector: Silentnight Deep Sleep.

Foam or fibre?

Foam changes support: it fills the dip in a tired mattress and takes pressure off hips and shoulders, and it sleeps warmer. Fibre changes feel: it adds softness on top of a bed that is firm but sound, washes in the machine and flattens over a year or two. A sagging mattress needs foam, and really needs replacing; a hard new mattress wants fibre or thin foam.

How deep should a topper be?

Two and a half centimetres is a padded protector. Three to five softens a firm bed. Seven or eight centimetres of foam, with a firmer base layer, is the minimum that changes support. Ten centimetres of fibre is plush but compresses; and anything over five needs deep fitted sheets.

Will a double topper fit my bed?

A UK double is 135 by 190 centimetres and every topper here is sold in that size. Silentnight's own pages quote 137 centimetres in places; the straps cover the difference. A European double is 140 by 200 and needs the king or EU size instead.

Why do foam toppers need 48 hours?

They ship vacuum-rolled. The maker's figure for depth is after the foam has expanded, which takes one to three days, and the smell of new foam needs the same time to air. Open it in a spare room if you can.

How to choose a mattress topper: depth, foam or fibre, the cover, and the UK bed sizes

Toppers are sold on a depth in centimetres and a word like memory foam or hollowfibre, and neither tells you whether the thing will fix your bed. This guide explains what depth actually buys, how foam and fibre differ in support, heat and lifespan, what to look for in the cover and the fixing, and the UK sizes, with four toppers from our shortlist as worked examples.

Best sunrise alarm clocks: six wake-up lights from Lumie and Philips, on the makers' own figures

A wake-up light is a lamp on a timer: it brightens over a set number of minutes before the alarm so you surface slowly instead of being yanked awake in a dark British winter. The figures that matter are the sunrise length and whether you can change it, the sounds and radio, the light colours, and the warranty. Six models from the two makers that publish those figures, Lumie and Philips, compared.
